Dr Anwar Sattar – Founder & Principal Consultant

About Dr Sattar

Dr Anwar Sattar is one of the UK’s foremost experts in lithium-ion battery recycling, with a proven track record spanning mechanical and hydrometallurgical process development, technology scale-up, and industry strategy.

He Graduated with a First-Class degree in Chemical Engineering and went to do a PhD in Hydrogen and Fuel Cells at the University of Birmingham. The focus of his PhD was on generating hydrogen from waste for use in Solid Oxide Fuel Cells.

He began his lithium ion battery recycling journey in 2016 when working as a Research Engineer  recycling at Axion Recycling where successfully developed a wet shredding process to safely shred end of life batteries and recover high quality black mass.

He then went on to work for European Metals Recycling (EMR) where he focused on the logistics of electric vehicle batteries and developed strategies and procedures for their transportation and handling.

In 2019, Dr Sattar joined Warwick Manufacturing Group where he spent five extremely fruitful years leading the Battery Recycling Group, which he took from just one person (himself) to becoming one of the most active groups in the UK publishing high quality reports and articles in high impact journals. His report on Automotive Battery Recycling in the UK has been credited by many as the catalyst for the development of the necessary end of life infrastructure for battery recycling. Dr Sattar moved back into the industry in 2024, first as the Scientific Director at Recyclus Group where he led the R&D activities at the UK's first industrial battery recycling plant. His work improved process efficiency and he developing new processes for recycling different batteries. He then went on to be the R&D Manager at Renewable Metals Ltd where he worked on the scale up of a novel alkali based hydrometallurgical process.
